VALVE FACTS Valve clearances should be checked after every 10 hours riding for competition bikes. Road bike valve clearances should be checked in accordance with the manufacturers recommendations. If a valve clearance closes up, it is usually due the valve deforming or the valve seat recessing into the head. This is a warning sign that the valve requires replacing. It is a false economy to fit new valves without re- cutting the valve seat. The life span of a new valve is greatly reduced when fitted to a worn seat. Titanium valves have a special oxide coating and therefore, should not be lapped into the valve seat. The coating is worn away by the lapping process, thus greatly reducing the life of the valve and seat. When we service a head here at ZOOM FACTORY, it is thoroughly cleaned using a blast and ultrasonic treatment to remove dirt, oil and carbon. The head is then checked for warping ,and any minor deviation is rectified. The valve seats are subjected to a three angle cutting process using special tungsten carbide cutters. This process allows us to produce a valve seat to the optimum angle and dimension, thus maximising the life of the valve. All the valve gear components are checked to ensure that they are within the specified dimensional tolerances. The head is re-built and the valves shimmed to the correct clearances. You may think this procedure sounds expensive, but here at ZOOM FACTORY we are cylinder head specialists, and therefore we can carry out this work and supply the parts at amazingly competitive prices. If you think you have a valve problem, please contact us, our advice is free!
